The following is a helpful guideline in determining if your patient would benefit from a sleep consultation with our sleep specialist or a direct referral for an overnight polysomnogram.
Patients who may benefit from a sleep consultation or polysomnography:
Patients who complain of excessive and inappropriate daytime sleepiness
Patients who have been made aware that they consistently snore
Patients who complain of awakening gasping for breath
Patients who have been made aware that they stop breathing in their sleep
Patients who have been made aware that they have frequent limb movements during sleep
Patients who complain of sudden weakness triggered by laughter or emotion
Patients who presented nocturnal hypoxemia while on pulse oximetry during sleep in the hospital or home setting
Patients who complain of difficulty falling or remaining asleep
Epworth Scale:
Epworth Sleepiness Scale is one of the most widely used subjective methods of assessing sleepiness. It is a short questionnaire in which a patient rates how likely they are to fall asleep in 8 specific circumstances. The Epworth scale is used to assess the probability of falling asleep rather than merely rating specific feelings or symptoms of sleepiness.
